Swedish sea rescuer shares lifesaving tips as annual drowning accidents reach 440

Every year, approximately 440 people are involved in drowning accidents in Sweden. Roughly half survive with or without injuries, according to statistics. However, when emergencies occur, it can be challenging to know the proper course of action. “Try to act as quickly as possible and call for help,” says Maria Montefusco, a volunteer sea rescuer.

In the case of a drowning accident, situations can escalate rapidly. Montefusco emphasizes the importance of being aware of one’s surroundings and knowing how to save lives. “Try to get the person out of the water as quickly as possible. If the individual is unconscious, attempt to blow five breaths of air into them to clear their lungs. After that, you can commence CPR with compressions,” she advises.
