A new addition has joined the team of beloved companions at Landspítalinn. Dogs Freyja, Kappi, and the ten-week-old Golden Retriever, Kjarkur, work traditional eight-hour shifts in occupational therapy at Klepp and also visit the psychiatric ward 32A at Hringbraut. The initiative has proven to be highly successful.

Kjarkur is the latest addition to the hospital’s team, brightening the day for patients at the psychiatric ward and during therapeutic activities. The existing dogs, Freyja, 11 years old, and Kappi, 4 years old, have already established a warm connection with the hospital community. Patients look forward to their visits, eagerly anticipating the joy and comfort that these dogs bring.

This innovative approach to mental health care integrates animal companionship, which has been shown to significantly enhance the emotional well-being of patients. The presence of the therapy dogs during treatment sessions fosters a supportive environment, allowing individuals to experience moments of happiness and calm amid challenging circumstances.

A video showcasing the dogs’ interactions with patients was also released, capturing the heartwarming moments shared in their daily routines. The therapy dogs are not only a source of joy but also play a vital role in the therapeutic process, demonstrating the valuable impact animals can have on mental health care.
