The Danish government announced that the HF (Higher Preparatory Examination) program will be phased out as the parliament convened on Tuesday. It will be replaced by a new vocational and professional education program called EPX. However, not everyone is welcoming this change.

Anders Højgaard, a 24-year-old student at HF&VUC Nord in Aalborg, believes HF has been a beneficial path for him. “I struggled through the educational system, but starting here has been great so far,” he shared.

Højgaard, who has ADHD, finds it challenging to concentrate and has lacked interest in subjects previously, including during his attempts at vocational training. He commented, “It ended the same way as other education. I think the level here is higher, but it’s also a bit more relaxed.”

He appreciates the character development focus at HF and the space for individuality compared to other educational paths. Højgaard has also taken advantage of the option to complete his HF over three years, rather than the usual two, and has received specialized pedagogical support. “I have some wonderful teachers who have plenty of time and capacity to actually help and understand one’s problems. That’s what I’ve needed,” he explained.

Under the government’s plans, HF will be replaced by the EPX program starting in 2030, although it will still be possible to take individual HF subjects, according to the press advisor for the Ministry of Education.
