The family of Lúðvík Pétursson, who died after falling into a crevice in Grindavík earlier this year, is calling for a comprehensive investigation of the incident and efforts to recover his remains from the fissure. Elías Pétursson, Lúðvík’s brother, has urged the Minister of Justice to establish an independent committee to thoroughly examine all aspects of the accident from start to finish.

“The family has two wishes: first, for everything possible to be done to find Lúll’s remains, and second, for a fair and impartial investigation into every facet of the matter,” Elías stated. He emphasized the importance of learning from the incident to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

Reports from the workplace safety authority indicate that adequate risk assessments were lacking, and there were issues with planning and oversight in the operations leading up to the fatal accident. Elías noted that there was no justification for entering a danger zone to work while geological movements were occurring. “This was not a task that was so time-sensitive that it should have been rushed into as it was. I believe no one can disagree on that any longer.”

In response to the incident, the Roads and Coastal Administration has taken over operations in Grindavík and is focused on ensuring safety through stringent regulations and protocols. Valgarður Guðmundsson, a specialist with the administration, affirmed that they are committed to learning from the incident, utilizing ground scanners and drones, and conducting risk assessments for every project.
