The police in East Iceland are still awaiting crucial evidence in the ongoing investigation surrounding the deaths of a couple in Neskaupstadur that occurred in August. Kristján Ólafur Guðnason, the chief of police, confirmed that they are waiting for important results from forensic examinations sent abroad and from crime scene investigations carried out by the capital region’s technical department. He expressed hope that the results would arrive this month, allowing for the next steps in the case.

A preliminary autopsy report has been completed, but it is not yet appropriate to disclose the cause of death. Details regarding whether a weapon was used remain undisclosed as well. One person is currently in custody, suspected of being involved in the couple’s deaths. A psychiatric evaluation of this suspect has been conducted, but a decision on whether to request an extension of their detention has not yet been made; this will likely be clarified later in the week.

As the investigation continues, local authorities stress the need for patience while awaiting important forensic details that will be pivotal in progressing with the case. The detention order for the suspect is set to expire this Friday, creating an urgent need for the police to act depending on the forthcoming forensic results.
