Halla Gunnarsdóttir, a member of the Left-Green Movement in Iceland, declared that the current government coalition has reached its end. She emphasized that pressing issues facing Icelandic society cannot be adequately addressed within the existing government structure.

During her appearance on a television program, Halla stated, “I want to assert that this government cooperation is over, and I believe most people can see that. The question now is how to resolve it and at what pace.” She pointed out that the challenges faced by society, particularly in housing and economic matters, are of such a nature that they cannot be handled effectively under the current coalition.

Halla criticized a recent proposal for coalition dissolution put forth at the Left-Green national assembly, labeling it inappropriate as a test for the Minister of Infrastructure, Svandís Svavarsdóttir. She noted that there is no ambitious plan from the government to tackle ongoing issues in these areas. Furthermore, she expressed concern about the rising financial burden on households, stating, “Every fourth home will lose fixed interest rates this winter, and people’s monthly payments could rise by 100,000 to 200,000 ISK. This situation demands action.”

Expressing her view that the proposal should not be seen as a public relations stunt, Halla indicated that it reflects serious concerns held by the nine party members involved. She mentioned that opinions on both the proposal and the coalition have been deeply divided within the party.
