Bakery closes after century of service in Húsavík, Iceland

Monday 30th 2024 on 20:24 in
Iceland

A bakery in Húsavík has closed its doors after over a century of operation due to financial difficulties. Established on Garðarsbraut in 1923, the bakery has been a staple of the community for more than 100 years, albeit under various names and ownerships. Initially named Brauðgerð Páls Jónssonar, it later became known as Brauðgerð K.Þ. when Kaupfélag Þingeyinga took over.

As of today, the bakery had been run by Brynja Óskar Stefánsdóttir and Hálfdán Sveinbjörn Kristinsson for over nine years under the name Heimabakarí. It was the only bakery in Húsavík, and customers were met with locked doors this morning. A notice on the window explained that the bakery has closed due to operational challenges and thanked the townspeople for their support over the years.

Heimabakarí’s closure marks the end of a long-standing tradition in Húsavík, leaving locals without a bakery for the first time in generations. The owners were unavailable for comment regarding the news.
