There is a growing call for a new approach to addiction treatment in Iceland. Thilo Beck, a Swiss psychiatrist and addiction specialist, emphasizes the importance of openness to new methods and perspectives.

During a recent visit to Iceland sponsored by the Matthild Association, Beck participated in a conference focusing on maintenance treatments for addiction. He engaged with local experts and treatment providers to discuss the current situation regarding substance use in the country.

Beck observed that there are still many unanswered questions about drug use in Iceland. He noted that there are people who continue to use substances without receiving treatment, which poses challenges to their recovery. “To understand the situation here better and to find solutions, we need flexibility and a willingness to collaborate,” Beck stated. He expressed hope that Icelandic communities could work together to develop effective strategies tailored to their unique circumstances.

As the country faces an ongoing struggle with substance use, it is crucial for stakeholders to consider innovative approaches that could potentially facilitate better outcomes for those affected. Beck’s insights suggest that fresh perspectives and a collaborative mindset may provide a pathway to improved addiction treatment in Iceland.
