Uncertainty surrounds glacier ice cave tours at Breiðamerkurjökull in Iceland

Uncertainty surrounds the start of glacier ice cave tours at Breiðamerkurjökull, originally scheduled to begin tomorrow, October 1st. Tourists have bookings starting from this date, but current conditions may require postponement of access to the caves for at least another month.

Travel companies in the Höfn region could face significant revenue losses if glacier tours remain prohibited throughout October, following a tragic accident this summer where ice collapsed on tourists. Following this incident, Vatnajökull National Park decided to reassess safety protocols for ice cave tours. There is criticism regarding some companies that held tours during the summer when ice conditions were unstable. The local council proposed a closure until December 1st, but the park’s board ultimately agreed to allow tours to commence on November 1st.

This decision could severely impact businesses in Höfn, which rely on October—a peak month for tours—since they offer tours from October through April. Company representatives reported they have been collaborating closely to ensure safety and are working to assess hazards before starting tours. Many travelers have reserved tours for October, with some planning made a year in advance.

Jón Helgi Björnsson, chair of the Vatnajökull National Park board, stated that efforts are underway to expedite the opening process to minimize losses for companies. The outcome is expected to clarify later today as the park finalizes new regulations on ice cave tours. Local businesses are optimistic that safety assessments will conclude in time to avoid canceling planned trips tomorrow.
