The government of the Faroe Islands has requested 7 million kroner from the Parliament for two thrusters to be installed on the Smyril ferry.

Next year, Smyril will undergo a dry dock for its 20-year refurbishment. During this process, it is essential to implement repairs and enhancements to extend the vessel’s lifespan, according to the national ferry service, Strandfaraskip.

Currently, the ship experiences severe vibrations at the stern, particularly during departure and arrival. These vibrations can damage the hull, leading to cracks and other structural issues.

To mitigate these vibrations, the installation of side thrusters at the stern of the ship is necessary. These thrusters will significantly reduce the vibrations experienced while the vessel is in operation.

Due to extended lead times for such installations, it is crucial to order the side thrusters promptly to ensure they are ready for the ship’s dry docking.
