Icelandic higher education community calls for representation in Brussels to enhance EU collaboration

The Icelandic higher education community is advocating for a representative presence in Brussels to better monitor developments in research and collaboration within the European Union. Jón Atli Benediktsson, the rector of the University of Iceland, emphasized the importance of having a dedicated position in Brussels to engage more effectively with significant interests at stake. He noted that while there is a scientific representative at the embassy acting as a preliminary measure, a stronger role is essential.

Benediktsson made these comments during an interview following a meeting of Nordic university rectors in Brussels last week, where he was accompanied by other rectors from Icelandic universities. He pointed out that the University of Iceland is currently leading the Aurora university collaboration, where representatives based in Brussels have proven to provide crucial early information, enabling a closer seat at the decision-making table.

He highlighted the consensus among Icelandic university rectors regarding the need for enhanced representation and disclosed that many have jointly applied for funding to sustain such a position. Although they have yet to secure financial support from the higher education authorities, Benediktsson remains optimistic about future applications. He underscored that if external funding does not come through, it would be essential for institutions like the University of Iceland to prioritize this matter, recognizing its significance for the community.

In contrast, three Norwegian universities already have representatives in Brussels, alongside research institutions that have established their offices in the city.
