The national NASTA Ilimatar 2024 exercise organized by the Women’s Preparedness Association was a success in terms of participation, with nearly 300 women from across Finland attending the weekend event in Siilinjärvi. Participants were able to learn various survival skills, including outdoor tent setup, emergency preparedness, and self-defense.

Among those benefiting from the experience was 39-year-old Jenni Rauvola from Naantali, who expressed her eagerness to gain valuable skills such as teamwork and an appreciation for nature. “This experience will help me understand my children who have served in the military,” shared 43-year-old Johanna Lehén from Järvenpää, acknowledging the insights gained from the training.

The breadth of participants varied significantly in age, from an 18-year-old to a 71-year-old, demonstrating the appeal of the courses. One newcomer, 18-year-old Aino Linnaranta from Kuopio, was engaged in a self-defense class that focused on urban safety, emphasizing the importance of personal security. “It feels safer knowing I can defend myself if necessary,” Linnaranta remarked.

Additionally, participants explored nature to collect edible wild ingredients. As they prepared to cook, the smell of freshly sautéed mushrooms wafted through the campsite. Organizers believe that the skills learned during the exercise contribute to overall safety and preparedness in daily life, enhancing participants’ confidence.

Iina-Riikka Niiranen, an instructor from Sodankylä, emphasized that many women would return with messages and skills that would empower them in everyday situations, enhancing their overall resilience.
