FPÖ emerges victorious in Austrian parliamentary election with historic far-right win
With 99.4% of the votes counted from Sunday’s parliamentary election in Austria, it is now clear that the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) has emerged as the largest party, securing 28.8% of the votes. The conservative People’s Party (ÖVP) follows closely with 26.3%. The results align closely with the first projections released during the evening.
In a victory speech on Sunday night, FPÖ leader Herbert Kickl declared, “Together, we have made history today. We have opened the door to a new era. What we have achieved exceeds my wildest dreams.” This election marks a significant milestone, as it is the first time since World War II that a far-right party has won a parliamentary election in Austria.
