During an address at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Iceland’s Foreign Minister Þórdís Kolbrún Reykfjörð Gylfadóttir emphasized that innocent civilians are bearing the brunt of armed conflicts, which have reached unprecedented levels since World War II. She noted the lack of a shared reality among nations and warned of the growing mistrust in democratic institutions worldwide.

“Innocent civilians pay the highest price in these conflicts,” she stated, highlighting ongoing violence, including Russia’s aggression in Ukraine, Sudan’s civil war, and severe conflicts in the Middle East. She condemned Russia for its blatant violations of the UN Charter, citing its failure to uphold its primary responsibilities as a permanent member of the Security Council in promoting international peace and security.

Gylfadóttir also expressed Iceland’s disapproval of the recent attacks on Israel on October 7, calling for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages while affirming the Palestinian people’s right to self-governance. She reiterated Iceland’s commitment to international law, stating that both rights and obligations of states are sacred.

Additionally, she announced Iceland’s intention to seek a position on the United Nations Human Rights Council, driven by a deep conviction that respect for human rights, the rule of law, justice, and fairness are essential components of a thriving society.
