In most municipalities of the Faroe Islands, residents are generally in favor of improving opportunities for establishing their own homes. However, this is not the case in the municipality of Sjóvar, where citizens express high satisfaction with housing options.

A recent large-scale survey conducted by Kringvarp Føroya in connection with the local elections revealed this sentiment. Mayor Artur Johansen attributes this satisfaction to timely developments. “Residential lots were made available before the Eysturoy Tunnel was constructed, and the population has grown since then,” he stated.

Magnus Jørmundsson, a newcomer to Strondum, shares his positive experience of moving to Sjóvar. He believes this satisfaction stems from the availability of housing options in the area. Originally from Fuglafjørður, he and his partner explored housing opportunities there, but found the options either non-existent or prohibitively expensive in Tórshavn.

In Strondum, they discovered available homes that fit their criteria and budget, along with good shopping and recreational options, prompting their decision to relocate.

Jørmundsson noted that many newcomers have settled in Sjóvar, which indicates a positive perception of local housing possibilities. However, he pointed out that 39% of residents desire higher prioritization of business conditions, alongside concerns about the need for improved road safety.

Despite the satisfaction regarding housing, residents expressed a clear demand for better traffic infrastructure, with 42% believing that roads and pathways should be given higher priority. Jørmundsson echoed these sentiments, highlighting the dangers of poor road conditions in the area.
