Iceland explores alternative routes amid seismic activity on Reykjanes Peninsula

In response to ongoing seismic activity on the Reykjanes Peninsula, Iceland’s Road and Coastal Administration is exploring options for alternative routes should the main Reykjanesbraut road become impassable due to lava flows or earthquakes. According to Bergþóra Þorkelsdóttir, the director of the agency, there are currently no obvious detours available for the daily traffic that uses Reykjanesbraut.

The primary goal is to ensure that if the road does have to close, the duration of the closure is minimized. Bergþóra emphasized the importance of assessing possible solutions to facilitate travel across the Reykjanes peninsula.

In addition, the agency has increased its winter maintenance efforts on marked detours to keep these routes functional during adverse weather, particularly as seismic activity persists. Bergþóra noted that they have maintained a heightened readiness to respond based on the conditions that arise day by day.

This proactive approach reflects the need to safeguard transportation options in light of potential volcanic eruptions in the area, which could lead to significant disruptions for residents and travelers alike.
