Deposit system for old bottles to end in Finland at year’s turn

The deposit system for old bottles will end at the turn of the year, announced Finnish beverage package recycling organization Suomen Palautuspakkaus (Palpa) on Tuesday. Tommi Vihavainen, the head of communications at Palpa, stated in a press release that individuals should return any old glass or plastic bottles they may still have at home, in storage, or at their cabin before the year ends.

This change affects glass bottles purchased from Alko before 2012, as well as older refillable plastic bottles, which stopped being sold in 2008. The old refillable plastic bottles are considerably thicker than modern plastic bottles.

Starting in 2025, the payment of deposits for bottles and cans will exclusively depend on the barcode present on the beverage packaging.
