Population revival in Ølve as young adults return, boosting kindergarten enrollment

In recent years, Ølve kindergarten faced closure due to a dwindling number of children, with only three registered. However, a significant change occurred when young adults who had previously migrated away returned to the small village of Ølve, which has a population of around 350 in Kvinnherad municipality. By the beginning of the new year, the kindergarten will be fully enrolled with 17 children.

The local communities of Ølve and Hatlestrand had previously sent letters to around 200 young adults, encouraging them to return home. Factors such as the establishment of a full-day school, active local organizations, job availability, and the preservation of the kindergarten have likely contributed to this demographic revival.

Gaute Revne, a 29-year-old who returned to Ølve with his partner and two children, stated that it is easier for others to come home when they see friends and family returning, creating a sense of community for their children. The return of around 12–13 families has helped to boost the village’s population.

The comprehensive appeal made by local leaders highlighted the need for more young people to consider returning to Ølve, emphasizing opportunities for active outdoor living, community facilities, and a strong educational system. Residents noted that while amenities are in place, the lack of rental housing poses challenges for newcomers, necessitating temporary accommodations until they decide to stay permanently.

Despite predictions indicating a population decline of over 9% in Kvinnherad by 2050, local initiatives aim to reverse this trend, transforming a once-declining community into a vibrant and attractive place for families.
