Kari Häkämies is known for taking command of any situation. In the landscape of southwestern Finland, he stands out as a remarkably outspoken figure, using colorful metaphors to enhance his spontaneous discourse, with strong gestures often leaving his conversation partners in the role of mere listeners. His political acumen was forged in the crucible of Finnish politics, where he has had a remarkable career as a Member of Parliament, two-time minister, senior official, and three-term municipal leader.

Born in Kymenlaakso, Häkämies found a home in the Turku region, particularly after being appointed director of the Southwest Finland Regional State Administrative Agency in 2012. Adjusting to this new chapter was facilitated by his familiarity with local political figures and family connections in the area.

In December 2014, he was elected provincial leader, a role he now concludes as he approaches retirement. Häkämies views the location of Varsinais-Suomi as both a gateway to the west and a challenge, describing it as being at the “bottom of a sack” with the sea to one side. This positioning necessitates strong political alliances and local ministers to achieve regional goals.

Häkämies acknowledges successes, notably the expansion of the University of Turku’s engineering program, which he believes enriches the local economy long-term. However, he also points out delays in transportation projects, especially regarding the construction of the Western Rail Line, a crucial initiative that has faced pressure over funding agreements.

As he transitions into retirement at the age of 68, Häkämies has a promising writing career in mind, with plans for a new novel next year, while keeping the door open to a possible return to politics following local elections next spring.
