Norway invests billions in F-35 fighter jets amid missile shortages

Norway has invested tens of billions of kroner in new F-35 fighter jets, marking what is described as the largest public sector investment in the nation’s history. These aircraft play a crucial role in Norway’s air defense strategy against potential enemies. In 2022, the F-35s took over primary defense responsibilities, replacing the old F-16s, which were retired.

Recent reports indicate a concerning shortage of the essential AMRAAM missiles, which are critical for air-to-air combat. Security researcher Karsten Friis warns that this shortage could hinder Norway’s air defense capabilities. If the country were attacked, there wouldn’t be enough missiles available to arm all the fighter jets simultaneously, limiting their effectiveness against potential aggressors.

The AMRAAM missiles are positioned as the primary weapon for Norwegian combat aircraft, providing them with the longest range among current armaments. Despite orders placed in previous years, delivery delays and increasing demand due to the ongoing war in Ukraine have led to challenges in maintaining adequate weapon supplies.

Norwegian officials acknowledge that the air force has requested more missiles and that orders are pending. However, the supply chain for military equipment has been significantly strained, with U.S. manufacturers struggling to meet global demand.

Norway’s armed forces are under scrutiny for their planning and management of the F-35 program, especially concerning the availability of arms and military readiness. Experts suggest that Norway must enhance its munitions stockpile and overall military preparedness to effectively respond to contemporary security challenges.
