Air Force Academy in Tikkakoski reports surge in respiratory infections among conscripts

This autumn, the Air Force Academy in Tikkakoski, Jyväskylä, has reported a higher than usual number of respiratory infections, including adenovirus, mycoplasma, coronavirus, and whooping cough. Currently, around 40 conscripts are experiencing respiratory or flu-like symptoms, and approximately 30 others on leave have been instructed to remain at home for treatment. Two conscripts are receiving hospital care, but according to the academy, their condition is stable. Not all infected are suffering from adenovirus-related illnesses.

The academy stated that preparations for the situation began last week, and they are closely monitoring the outbreak. To combat the spread of infections, they have reintroduced measures previously used during the pandemic. Sami Nenonen, the academy’s deputy commander, emphasized the importance of hand hygiene and coughing etiquette among personnel and conscripts. Cleaning efforts have been intensified, and conscripts’ units have been isolated from each other during both training and leisure activities.

Adenovirus poses specific challenges as some infected individuals may remain asymptomatic, and the virus can survive on surfaces for an unusually extended period. The adenovirus has also been detected this autumn at the Niinisalo garrison and in the Kainuu Brigade in Kajaani.
