A large crowd gathered in the central square of Tórshavn today for the unveiling of a statue honoring Andrea Árting in Steinatún.

The statue, created by artist Edvard Fuglø, is a prominent silhouette that captures the essence of Árting’s character.

Andrea Árting was a remarkable woman known for her significant contributions. In 1937, she became the first chairwoman of the Tórshavn Women’s Labor Association, just one year after its establishment.

Árting was a leader in the women’s movement, advocating primarily for equal pay for equal work. She dedicated 40 years to this cause as chairwoman and successfully negotiated for equal pay in 1977, shortly before she stepped down from her position.

This statue not only commemorates Árting’s legacy but also serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for gender equality.
