New tiny houses to support homeless individuals in Reykjanesbær, Iceland

Approximately twenty people are currently homeless in Reykjanesbær. In an effort to address this issue, new tiny houses are being constructed for individuals struggling with mental health and addiction disorders. Four existing tiny houses are already operational in the town, and an additional four units are set to open by the end of the year.

Each tiny house measures around thirty square meters, designed to accommodate individuals in need. Community feedback during the project’s initial public presentation was mixed, with some residents responding critically.

This year, the government allocated fifty million Icelandic krónur to support homelessness initiatives. Sigurrós Antonsdóttir, chairman of the welfare committee in Reykjanesbær, emphasized the need for further action: “We must continue to advocate for increased funding in this area. At least four more houses are needed next year; if not next year, then the year after.”

The initiative is part of a broader effort to combat homelessness and provide safe living environments for those facing challenges related to mental health and substance use. The local administration aims to ensure that vulnerable individuals receive the support they need and are integrated back into the community effectively.
