Editor criticizes government actions towards private media in Faroe Islands

The election period is now halfway through, and there is little hope that this government will remedy the damage. On the contrary, the intention seems to be to worsen the situation, according to Eirikur Lindenskov.

He notes that when a new government was formed and a new coalition document was drafted, there was an initial optimism that conditions for private media would improve. However, Lindenskov, editor of Sosialurin, criticizes politician Sirið Stenberg for allegedly working against this progress.

Lindenskov expresses his bewilderment at a politically appointed board that is withholding funds meant for private media, which do not want to disclose sources and conduct for the board:

“There are instances where media outlets have been asked for this information, which makes no sense in a free media landscape,” he says. He points out that “newspapers are being left to fend for themselves, and traditional media are navigating their own waters.”

He goes on to suggest that while it may be true that the times have passed for newspapers and conventional media, this issue does not concern Sirið Stenberg.

For those interested, a conversation with Eirikur Lindenskov is available to listen to.
