Emmi Nuorgam, a journalist and influencer, found herself in the spotlight last summer when her old blog posts were resurfaced. These writings contained racist and sexist content. Nuorgam, who now advocates for human rights and minority issues, previously struggled with her identity and sought attention through provocative writing.

In late June, while attending Finland’s largest human rights event, Helsinki Pride, Nuorgam received alarming messages about discussions regarding her on the Ylilauta forum, notorious for its misogyny and racism. Initially unfazed, her reaction changed after spotting a screenshot of her long-removed blog. This discovery prompted weeks of distress and self-reflection.

Around 15 years ago, Nuorgam had shared a math test designed for Romani people that contained deeply inappropriate questions, as well as mockery directed at individuals claiming victim status based on their minority identities. She acknowledged her past intention of being an outspoken provocateur, believing all publicity to be beneficial.

Despite the backlash and a drop in Instagram followers, Nuorgam managed to retain her job and friendships, subsequently apologizing and reflecting on her growth. Throughout the summer, users on Ylilauta unearthed her blog, sharing its controversial remnants, which left her questioning her former views.

Nuorgam has since undergone a profound transformation, evolving from her youth marked by anger and the desire for acceptance to becoming a voice for contemporary issues like racism and diversity. She has made a conscious effort to distance herself from her past, enlisting professional help to erase questionable online content.

Today, Nuorgam is recognized as an advocate for human rights, authors columns, and engages in important societal discussions through her podcast, while acknowledging her ongoing journey of self-discovery and rectification.
