National Union of Icelandic Students calls for reevaluation of Student Loan Fund amid rising repayment burdens

The chairperson of the National Union of Icelandic Students, Lísa Margrét Gunnarsdóttir, emphasizes the importance of reevaluating the role of the Student Loan Fund. She argues that the new legislation introduced in 2020 has not achieved its intended effects. The laws aimed to increase the number of students graduating on time according to their curricula and to improve financial resource utilization. However, Lísa Margrét notes that students are feeling a heavier repayment burden than before, and the proportion of those graduating within the planned timeframe has not increased.

She asserts that while the Student Loan Fund is legally mandated to serve as a social equalization fund, it currently fails to fulfill this role. “The Student Fund should facilitate access to higher education rather than burdening individuals in the long term,” she states.

The full interview discussing these issues can be accessed through various media outlets.
