Faroe Islands

The vegetable production company, Spírar and Sporar, has been awarded the title of ‘Business Initiative of the Year 2024’.

This announcement was made at the Industry Day held today at the Nordic House.

The recognition of Spírar and Sporar emphasizes that the company’s achievements require courage, creativity, and perseverance in their operations.

The judging panel noted several advantages of local food production in the Faroe Islands, stating that it holds significant benefits for both society and the environment. This is particularly crucial in a setting where environmental and social challenges become increasingly pressing. By producing food locally, the Faroe Islands can reduce dependency on imported food products, while residents gain access to fresher and healthier locally-sourced ingredients.

Over the past two years, Spírar and Sporar have utilized greenhouse management, also known as hydroponics, to cultivate a variety of vegetables and herbs without the use of pesticides. Their produce includes different types of lettuce, batavia lettuce, dill, rosemary, thyme, and parsley.

Next year, the company plans to expand its operations, which will include the production of soups as well.
