Discussion ignited over forest research influence in Finland

A column by Tapio Mäntä, the rector of the University of Eastern Finland, in Suomen Kuvalehti has sparked a discussion on social media about how stakeholders in the forestry sector are attempting to influence forest research in Finland. Researchers interviewed by Yle shared instances over the years where companies, advocacy groups, or officials have attempted to suppress research findings. According to Professor Kaisa Raitio, representatives from Metsähallitus, the Finnish government’s forestry agency, have been involved in such suppression attempts in the past. However, Hannu Lehtonen, Metsähallitus’ Director of Forest Utilization and Planning, asserts that such practices would not occur today, stating, “This is not part of our operational methods at all.”

Lehtonen acknowledged a specific case referenced in the Yle article is from twenty years ago, but he still expressed regret over any researcher experiencing inappropriate treatment. He emphasized that diverse perspectives in research are vital to drawn conclusions. Professor Janne Kotiaho mentioned that some researchers avoid engaging in public discourse out of fear of backlash, a situation Lehtonen finds troubling. As a former researcher, he encouraged active participation in discussions without fear of consequences.

Karoliina Niemi, head of forestry at the Finnish Forest Industries, firmly denies allegations of the industry pressuring researchers. She deems such accusations outdated and maintains that the industry values independent Finnish research, engaging in constructive collaboration with various research organizations to ensure diverse and holistic approaches. Mikko Tiirola, chair of the MTK Forest Council, also defended his critical stance on forest research in Yle’s article, encouraging researchers to actively engage in forest discussions.
