The legislation regarding the Language Council’s functions is proving effective.

According to the legal framework, the Language Council provides guidance, advice, and information to public authorities and the general public on matters related to the Faroese language in both spoken and written forms, as well as the Faroese sign language. The council’s operations are functioning well, as indicated in a report presented to the Parliament by SiriĆ° Stenberg, Minister of Culture.

Other elements of the legislation regarding the Language Council and its collaboration also function, but primarily at an informal level. This situation needs improvement and better organization.

The report suggests that the law governing the Language Council may have benefited from being structured as a framework law with accompanying regulations that the Language Council, the Naming Committee, and the Place Name Committee adhere to.

There is a strong desire for significantly improved conditions for the Faroese sign language, particularly in terms of funding, workforce development, and research opportunities.

A working group has conducted a review of the Language Council. The main discussion regarding the council will take place in Parliament on September 25.

The full report can be accessed here.
