The Turku Court of Appeal increased the sentence on Friday for a shooting incident that occurred in August 2023 at Näsipuisto in Tampere. A 22-year-old man, who had previously been sentenced by the Pirkanmaa District Court to five years and four months in prison for attempted murder, saw his punishment upgraded.

According to the district court’s ruling, the man shot at an acquaintance with a pistol, with the bullets striking various parts of the victim’s body. Some of the wounds could have been fatal under different circumstances, as noted by the court. The accused admitted to the shooting during his interrogation, a factor that the district court considered as mitigating in its sentencing.

However, the Court of Appeal assessed the significance of the confession as less substantial than the district court did. It pointed out that the man only confessed six days after his arrest. Ultimately, the appeal court extended the sentence by six months, imposing a total prison term of five years and ten months on Simo Antti Oikarinen, 22.
