Samples are being collected today from a young bear that was shot on Höfðaströnd in Jökulfjörður yesterday. Representatives from the Food and Veterinary Authority, the Natural History Institute, and the Keldur Research Station are participating in this sampling. The bear will be tested for rabies and parasites. The samples will be analyzed at Keldur, with results expected by mid-next week. The carcass will be frozen.

The bear in question is a young female, weighing between 150 and 200 kilograms. The police in the West region have not yet decided whether to conduct another search operation in the Westfjords today to determine if more bears are present. A Coast Guard helicopter flew over the area yesterday, surveying from Aðalvík to Gjögri.
