Zoning changes approved for Mariukirkjan and Kerit in Tórshavn, Faroe Islands

Friday 20th 2024 on 11:39 in
Faroe Islands

The zoning regulations for the area where Mariukirkjan is located are set to change, allowing Mariukirkjan and the associated building, Kerit, to become separate parcels of land.

The land registry office has denied the request for subdivision unless a special zoning plan is established for the area. However, the administration of Tórshavn Municipality believes that a new special zoning plan is not necessary.

To avoid future uncertainties and enable Mariukirkjan to stand on its own parcel, the administration has proposed modifying the wording in the existing zoning regulations regarding special zoning plans. This change would ensure that such plans do not apply to the subdivision and merging of parcels.

The city council has approved this proposal.

Mariukirkjan is set to be handed over to the Catholic Church in the Faroe Islands, while health authorities plan to purchase the building, Kerit.
