The polar bear that was recently encountered in the Westfjords of Iceland is being transported to Reykjavik for further investigation by the Icelandic Institute of Natural History. The Landhelgisgæsla, Iceland’s coast guard, is transferring the bear’s body after local police decided to euthanize it, following consultations with the Environment Agency.

Images of the bear have been shared by the Westfjords Police on social media, showcasing the animal both alive in its natural habitat and after it was killed. Details regarding the bear’s age or health status are still limited, but authorities acted after confirming the bear’s presence in the area, prompted by concerns for public safety.

The regions where the bear was found are experiencing increased scrutiny, as the Institute plans to conduct a thorough examination upon its arrival in the capital. This tragic incident highlights ongoing challenges related to wildlife safety and human encounters in Iceland’s remote areas.
