Richard Jomshof, a member of the Sweden Democrats, has recently stepped down as chairman of the Justice Committee while under investigation for incitement against a group due to two controversial images shared on his social media. Social Minister Jakob Forssmed criticized the images, stating they could exacerbate polarization and portray Muslims as a significant threat, which he deemed harmful.

The Social Democrats are calling for Prime Minister Kristersson to take action and permanently remove Jomshof from his position. However, Kristersson has indicated that this situation will not affect the collaboration between his government and the Sweden Democrats.

Forssmed defended the alliance with the Sweden Democrats, acknowledging that there have been times of criticism aimed at them, particularly concerning their statements. He emphasized the importance of addressing both Islamophobia and antisemitism within the party. While he noted improvements regarding antisemitism, he mentioned that inappropriate and harmful statements concerning Islam still occur. Forssmed called for decisive action on these issues.

When asked about the Social Democrats’ demand for Jomshof’s dismissal in the event of a conviction for incitement, the social minister refrained from commenting on the legal proceedings or possible outcomes.

The situation reflects ongoing tensions in Swedish politics regarding freedom of speech, social cohesion, and the balance between critique and harmful rhetoric.
