The artwork “Puhti” by esteemed Finnish artist Pauno Pohjolainen was unveiled in Oulu in 1999, with Mrs. Eeva Ahtisaari presenting the majestic wooden relief. The event was attended by various dignitaries, including then-President Martti Ahtisaari, to celebrate the opening of the new electronics training center at the North Finland Institute of Technology, Pohto, and its 25-year history.

Commissioned specifically from the Ars Fennica-awarded artist for the occasion, the large wood sculpture remains at the now-abandoned premises of the old industrial school after Pohto relocated from Hietasaari a few years ago. Unfortunately, the building has suffered extensive vandalism, with nearly all windows shattered and interior spaces severely damaged since its construction in the 1970s. Despite this, “Puhti” has escaped the worst destruction, although parts of the artwork have fallen to the ground.

Pohjolainen expressed his distress over the fate of his work. He learned only recently that the sculpture was left behind in a dilapidated building, lamenting that this reflects a lack of appreciation for culture and art in Finland. He added, “It wouldn’t have been unreasonable for someone to contact me. It’s shocking. My heart is crying.”

The former art piece has recently been sold to a new owner, although it has not been collected yet. Markku Oikarinen, the CEO of Pohto, stated that it took considerable effort to find a buyer, emphasizing the artwork’s significance in its original space. He conveyed the desire for the new owner to reach out to Pohjolainen to ensure the sculpture is preserved and repaired if necessary.
