Linda Jakobsson’s experience of burnout last winter and spring was the result of various pressures. The demanding nature of her work in the gaming industry, combined with the challenges of raising small children, health issues, and personal concerns, culminated in a burden that became too heavy to bear. She believes her exhaustion developed gradually, ultimately leading to difficulties even getting out of bed. “I felt like I couldn’t cope with everything,” she said, realizing that changes were necessary.

Jakobsson feels that life demands too much from people, as they are expected to excel in their roles as partners, friends, and family members, while also maintaining sufficient physical activity and healthy eating. She emphasizes the individualistic and demanding nature of modern life and believes many people share her feelings of inadequacy due to work and parenting pressures. The societal expectations of parenting seem especially overwhelming, as the task appears impossible if one aims for perfection.

Amidst widespread discussions in Finnish media about a “fatigue epidemic,” Jakobsson, a social media influencer with over 17,000 followers on Instagram, has openly addressed her struggles with burnout. She aims to spread the message of compassion and authenticity, noting that social media often portrays an unrealistic picture of life, focusing on highlight moments while neglecting the messier realities.

Jakobsson has learned that her past stress was largely self-imposed, rooted in perfectionism. Now, she strives for balance, acknowledging that life should also accommodate relaxation and enjoyment. Quality sleep and a more forgiving attitude towards family life have become essential aspects of her well-being. “It doesn’t matter if the kids leave the house in mismatched socks,” she stated, illustrating a shift in her perspective.
