Homelessness sparks debate in Aalborg as locals call for community dialogue

At sunrise, Teddy is on the move. Without a permanent home to call his own, he roams the central area of Aalborg until he can find shelter for the night at a local warming center. His real name is Theis Christensen, but he prefers the nickname Teddy, claiming it reflects his sweet nature. However, as he and his friends gather in public squares, they face negative perceptions from some locals. Recent complaints highlight unease regarding homelessness and social issues affecting the city’s atmosphere.

Bettina Graff, a resident near Frederikstorv, shares her concerns about the loud behavior of some homeless individuals, saying, “We feel unsafe due to the screaming, noise, and chaos.” When she looks out her apartment window, she often spots Teddy and others relaxing with beers near a playground that appears rarely used. Teddy acknowledges these feelings of unease but insists there’s no reason to fear him and that he is always open to conversation. He states, “If someone asks us to move, we will,” countering Graff’s experience of feeling verbally attacked when inquiring about their activities.

In response to community concerns, Aalborg officials are organizing a town meeting aimed at finding common ground among residents, the police, and local charities. Graff hopes for a welcoming public space, noting, “Right now, people only pass through; they have no reason to stay.”

Despite their differences, both Teddy and Graff agree on the need for coexistence in the community. Teddy expresses, “We are also human. We need a place to be,” while Graff emphasizes that everyone should be included in a way that doesn’t compromise safety or comfort. The upcoming meeting is seen as a potential first step toward dialogue and understanding between all parties.
