Citizen meeting in Aalborg addresses noise concerns and community safety

A citizen meeting taking place this afternoon in Aalborg aims to address concerns over noise and unrest in the city center, where residents have reported feeling unsafe due to large groups of socially vulnerable individuals gathering in public spaces from morning until late evening. Local residents have expressed frustration over escalating tensions that sometimes lead to fights and disruptive behavior, particularly during dinner hours.

Rikke Thorup, a resident near John F. Kennedy’s Square, described her discomfort with the situation, noting that gatherings become rowdier as the day progresses, resulting in loud music, arguments, and even physical confrontations. She emphasized that the noise disrupts her daily life.

One individual identified as socially vulnerable is homeless man Theis Christensen, known as Teddy. He acknowledges the feelings of unease some may have when he and his friends occupy a bench but believes there’s no reason for concern. Teddy mentioned that they are willing to move if asked, and he has encountered some neighbors who request quieter mornings but prefers to engage with complaints as they arise.

TinaMaria Larsen, from the Center for Social Initiatives, stated that the goal of the meeting is not to displace individuals like Teddy but to ensure everyone feels welcome and respected in the urban environment. Potential solutions discussed may include adding more public toilets or benches. Larsen underscored the need for community engagement and stressed that the city will take residents’ feedback seriously.

The meeting will include participation from the police, shelters, and representatives from the vulnerable communities in the area.
