In Mosfellsbær, about 300 parents gathered for a town meeting to discuss the issues facing youth in their community. The mayor expressed her delight at the overwhelming turnout, which she described as surpassing her optimistic expectations.

The impetus for this meeting stemmed from noticeable concerns regarding youth behavior, particularly after incidents of youth-related violence and intoxication were reported during a local festival. Notably, a young girl lost her life due to a stabbing on Culture Night, followed by another knife incident a week later during the town’s festival, highlighting issues surrounding intoxicated youths from various parts of the capital region.

Mayor Regína Ásvaldsdóttir acknowledged that both local youths and their parents were apprehensive leading up to the festival, prompting the decision to convene a meeting to address these concerns. She anticipated around 70 to 100 attendees but was pleasantly surprised by the turnout of 300 parents, indicating a strong collective desire to contribute to community safety.

The meeting served as a platform for parents to voice their worries, and the municipality is now considering proposals from residents. Furthermore, community members are encouraged to participate in initiatives aimed at enhancing parental involvement.

Regína highlighted the valuable social capital within the community, noting that such extensive engagement reflects a readiness among residents to take meaningful action. She emphasized the need for collaboration between community institutions and parents to tackle the complex challenges they face together.
