In Mosfellsbær, approximately 300 parents gathered to discuss the situation of youth in the community, significantly exceeding the mayor’s expectations for participation. The mayor, Regína Ásvaldsdóttir, expressed her satisfaction with the strong turnout following concerns related to youth behavior during a local festival where public intoxication was evident.

The meeting was ignited by recent alarming incidents involving youth and knife violence, including the tragic stabbing of a young girl during a cultural event. These events raised serious community concerns, prompting the municipal council to organize the gathering with parents to address these pressing issues.

Regína noted, “We sensed that local youth and their parents were apprehensive leading up to the festival, prompting us to invite parents for a discussion.” The turnout surpassed the council’s hopeful estimate of 70 to 100 attendees, demonstrating a collective commitment to improving community safety.

Many concerns and suggestions were raised during the meeting. The council is considering residents’ proposals and encouraging community involvement, such as participating in parent-led activities. Regína emphasized the importance of collective action, stating, “There’s a wealth of social capital in this community, and everyone is ready to contribute. It’s clear that no single entity can resolve this complex situation; we must all work together, including both institutional bodies and the parents themselves.”
