The planned deportation of Yazan Tamimi and his family has been halted after the Minister of Justice, Guðrún Hafsteinsdóttir, intervened on Monday morning. According to the National Police Commissioner, logistical preparations for deporting individuals typically require considerable time, making it impossible to execute the transfer before the upcoming Saturday, September 21.

The Commissioner’s office indicated that standard protocols for preparing such changes necessitate longer notice, particularly because, starting next Saturday, the Tamimi family will have the opportunity to request a substantive review of their application for international protection.

The decision to pause the family’s deportation followed a request for discussion within the government, highlighting an increasing focus on the situation regarding asylum seekers in Iceland. Concerns over the treatment and rights of these individuals have intensified, especially in light of new regulations.

As the situation develops, the Tamimi family eagerly awaits clarity regarding their future in Iceland.
