Loud music played in psychiatric clinic waiting areas in Pori to mask noise complaints

Loud music plays in the waiting areas of the psychiatric clinic in Pori, aimed at masking noises that have led to several complaints over the past year. The S-building, which serves the mental health services of the Satakunta welfare area, has been operational for a year. The construction aimed for comfort and safety, but this emphasis may have led to private conversations being overheard.

Jari Syystö, the project manager for the Satakunta welfare area, acknowledged that compromises were made during the design process. The escape door between rooms was deemed the best option available in Finland. “There’s only one door for quick exits. Adding a second door could improve sound insulation but would significantly hinder escape routes,” he explained.

In response to the noise issues, the welfare area has conducted sound insulation measurements in the building. According to the results, the walls and doors were constructed as specified. The same door and wall types have been utilized in other hospitals, with Satasairaala having them for over 30 years without widespread concerns.

Although Syystö does not consider the sound insulation problem to be severe, he recognizes the discomfort caused by noise. Currently, adjustments are being made to the doors to ensure a tighter fit against seals, with ongoing monitoring to determine if further repairs are necessary during the first year’s warranty period.
