A 49-year-old man has confessed to vandalizing Nidaros Cathedral and a Jewish cemetery in Trondheim. In March and April, police in Trøndelag district received multiple reports from the public regarding the man’s aggressive and disturbing behavior, including minor vandalism and shoplifting.

On April 8, he used orange spray paint to cover the walls of the cathedral with messages, one of which, “SOSSOSSOS,” is an emergency signal similar to “mayday,” indicating imminent danger. When asked about his motivations, he stated, “Save our souls,” explaining his admiration for the cathedral, referring to it as “the most beautiful building in the city.”

Repair costs for the damage inflicted on Nidaros Cathedral are estimated at around 100,000 Norwegian kroner, but the medieval stone has suffered lasting harm. Shortly after, the defendant spray-painted “Hitler” on the glass wall of a visitors’ center, claiming it was intended to provoke, and insisted he is not a Nazi but a social democrat.

Four days later, he vandalized the Jewish cemetery, destroying a Star of David and breaking the windows of several cars. When questioned about his actions, he denied being anti-Semitic, insisting it was a cry for help and expressing his love for Jewish people.

The man has a documented history of psychological issues and substance abuse, having been hospitalized multiple times this year with suspected psychosis. Law enforcement sought his detention following a series of outbursts, as he admitted he enjoys being outdoors more than he does in jail.

Experts have concluded that he is unable to recognize his illness, prompting calls for mandatory mental health treatment in light of his admissions regarding future substance use.
