Man charged with assault remains in custody for additional four weeks in Sandá, Faroe Islands

Faroe Islands

A man charged with assaulting a woman in Sandá on April 28 will remain in custody for an additional four weeks, as decided by the court today.

The prosecution argued for the extension of his pre-trial detention, citing concerns that the man might flee the country. During a court hearing, the man expressed his unwillingness to remain in custody voluntarily, prompting the legal proceedings.

He has been in custody since the incident on April 28.

The detention has been extended multiple times. Occasionally, the man has chosen to request an extension voluntarily, but at other times, he allows the court to make the decision. He has appealed the court’s rulings to the Eastern High Court, which has so far upheld the decisions of the Faroese court.

The assault occurred while a young woman was walking along the path by Sandá in Tórshavn. The perpetrator approached her from behind and committed a violent act against her. Approximately fifteen minutes after the assault, police apprehended a man in the cemetery on Velbastaðurvegin.

The detainee is in his thirties and is a foreign national.
