More than 120 employees of the Hornafjörður municipality in East Iceland are potentially heading for a strike on October 2nd. Members of the Afls trade union are currently voting on whether to cease work, with the voting concluding on September 24th.

If the strike is approved, all Afls members employed by the Hornafjörður municipality will stop work at 11 AM on Wednesday, October 2nd, and the strike will be indefinite. The affected workers include those in primary and preschool education (excluding teachers and administrators), municipal warehouse staff, port employees, and personnel in sports facilities and social services, as well as those working with disabled individuals.

The dispute centers around specific provisions regarding the rights to use personal sick leave for child illnesses, clothing allowances for outdoor gear instead of work attire, and payments for cleaning after events in sports facilities.

According to Afls, negotiations regarding their demands for renewing the collective agreement with the Hornafjörður municipality have been unsuccessful, even after mediation by the state conciliator. As such, the union feels compelled to take action.
