Jouni Markkanen has been appointed as the new assistant mayor of Tampere, following a tumultuous period that resulted from the dismissal of his predecessor, Ilkka Sasi. During an introduction on Tuesday morning, Markkanen, a new family man residing in Tammela, stated, “I’m a fresh father.”

Educated as a Master of Science in Economics, Markkanen has been involved with the National Coalition Party, focusing on training related to digitalization. He has also worked on digital projects for the party’s office. A city council member since 2012, he has served on the city’s board and as vice-chair of the corporate committee.

Markkanen’s appointment came amid a significant media uproar surrounding Sasi, who lost the council’s trust due to allegations of sexual harassment and alcohol-related offenses earlier this year. Although Sasi was not charged with any crimes by the end of August, the majority of council members felt he could not continue as assistant mayor. The council voted to remove Sasi by a margin of 54 to 2, with 11 members abstaining.

Markkanen will serve as assistant mayor until the end of the current council term, which concludes next summer. He expressed surprise at his unexpected appointment. However, he believes he can achieve positive outcomes for Tampere in a short timeframe.

Immediately upon assuming his new role, Markkanen was set to attend a city budget seminar. His responsibilities will include matters related to the vitality and expertise board as well as the housing and real estate board. Additionally, he aims to address the transition of employment services from TE offices to municipalities at the start of the new year and to continue advocating for digitalization in his new position.
