Residents of Faroe Islands prioritize infrastructure over sustainable development in upcoming municipal elections

A recent survey conducted by Kringvarp regarding the upcoming municipal elections in November reveals that residents of the Faroe Islands do not prioritize sustainable development in their local municipalities.

Ragnheiður Bogadóttir, a lecturer in social sciences at the University of the Faroe Islands, notes that locals perceive sustainable initiatives as mere expenses. In response to questions about whether sustainable solutions and green areas should be prioritized, the survey results show such preferences are minimal. In fact, sustainably-focused initiatives fail to make it onto the agenda in any municipality.

Instead, the Faroese population expresses a stronger focus on improving infrastructure such as roads and enhancing conditions for children, youth, and the elderly. This trend suggests a significant shift in priorities, with community members showing a readiness to invest in immediate societal needs over long-term environmental considerations.
