Copenhagen set to establish Palestine Square in Nørrebro following committee vote

Copenhagen is set to establish a Palestine Square following a majority vote in the city’s Technical and Environmental Committee. The square will be located in Nørrebro, surrounded by a skate park and a café, frequented by visitors. Specifically, it will be situated between Nørrebrogade, Esromgade, and Hillerødgade.

The proposal for Palestine Square has been subject to numerous discussions among politicians. Last October, the left-leaning parties, including the Unity List, Socialist People’s Party, Social Liberal Party, and the Alternative, introduced the idea. However, the proposal was postponed after the terror attack in Israel on October 7, 2023, which subsequently escalated into significant conflict between Israel and Hamas, making the matter highly sensitive.

As the committee rejected the proposal, it must now advance to the Citizen Representation for further consideration. The Citizen Representation will vote on the square sometime around October. Helle Bonnesen expressed her relief that the plans have been temporarily halted, noting that the issue will now enter a public consultation phase. She emphasized the importance of community feedback on naming a location Palestine Square amid ongoing tensions.

Despite the challenges, there appears to be a strong chance the proposal could pass, as the four supporting parties hold a majority at Copenhagen City Hall. Further updates on this issue are expected as the situation develops.
