Whales spotted in Reyðarfjörður showcasing extraordinary dolphin behavior

A significant pod of small whales was spotted in Reyðarfjörður, likely consisting of a large number of dolphins. Whales were seen leaping out of the water to breathe before diving back in search of food. A witness reported seeing the pod swim in circles and chase after fish.

The pod was first observed this morning while swimming into Reyðarfjörður, notably jumping high near the Fjarðaál aluminum plant around 10:30 AM. Employees of the Kaldvík fish farming company spotted the whales while they were close to the aquaculture facility at Sigmundarhús. They estimate the number of dolphins could be in the dozens, if not reaching into the hundreds, as they appeared to be frolicking in the fjord.

Videos captured by Kaldvík staff from their boat during lunchtime show the excitement of this natural spectacle in Reyðarfjörður. The sighting of such a large group of dolphins is considered extraordinary by local observers, as they delight in the lively acrobatics of these marine creatures.

This event highlights not only the beauty of Iceland’s coastal waters but also the importance of preserving marine ecosystems, which continue to support such stunning wildlife interactions.
