On Monday, the Pirkanmaa District Court will address the detention of a man suspected of a shooting incident on Hämeenkatu in Tampere. The 37-year-old man is alleged to have murdered a woman in her thirties, as well as committing endangerment and firearm offenses. Security measures at the courthouse have been increased in response to the case, with police presence noted in the lobby and a motorcycle unit outside, alongside regular patrols.

The police received an emergency call on Thursday at 7:46 PM reporting that a man had shot a woman in downtown Tampere. They announced the woman’s death the following morning. The suspect and victim were known to each other. The shooting has garnered significant attention due to its occurrence on a weekday evening, when numerous people were present in the area.

The victim was a mother with a young child, who fortunately was not injured during the incident. Reports indicate that the deceased, of Romani descent, was pregnant. The suspect also has a lengthy criminal history. According to Yle Uutiset, the details of the parties involved are crucial for understanding the events surrounding the case.

Following the incident, the Romani organization Romano Missio reported receiving hundreds of concerned calls regarding how recent acts of violence are impacting the safety of Romani people. The organization condemned all forms of violence.

The suspect has previous convictions for violent crimes, robbery, assault, and serious traffic violations. In 2021, the Pirkanmaa District Court sentenced him to 4 years and 5 months in prison for two attempts of murder. He has also been subjected to restraining orders, the latest of which was issued in January, assessing that he could be released from prison no earlier than May. Some restraining orders were dismissed due to the absence of the applicants in court. The situation is still developing.
